Free beginner coaching in August

BUDS are running extra free beginner coaching sessions on Wednesdays throughout August in the lead-up to the new season. We will start you from the very start – how to catch and throw a frisbee – and get you ready to play your first game.

No pre-registration required, simply turn up and meet the crew!

What is Ultimate Frisbee?

Ultimate Frisbee is a team sport that is like a cross between netball and American football, played with a flying disc. Teams work together to pass the disc around and try and take a catch in the endzone to score a goal. The sport is non-contact and self refereed, so players take responsibility for the safety of themselves, their teammates and their opponents.

See our What Is Ultimate page for more.

Sounds interesting, but I have never played before?

Brand new players are welcome at BUDS!

Players register as individuals and teams are drawn evenly based on experience levels. While you will be on a field with experienced players, you will likely be matched up with someone who is a similar level to you.

There are plenty of friendly coaches at BUDS who are happy to show you the basics. There are also weekly group coaching sessions focussed on particular skills.

Ultimate is self-refereed, but new players are given leeway and assistance from other players while they get settled.

When/where do you play?

We play at Allard Park, on Donald Street in Brunswick East.

You can meet us on the steps outside the main pavilion on the Donald Street side of the oval.

The closest tram stop is Mitchell Street/Holmes Street on the 1 or 6 tram lines.

Street parking is available on Donald Street.

Skill practice and coaching is available from 7pm, with games commencing around 7:30pm

The vibe

BUDS aims to be a fun, highly spirited, safe and inclusive space with a focus on development of all players at any skill level. We have a wonderful community of players that are happy to support players at all experience levels, new players are welcome! There are no age restrictions, our group spans decades!

Safety and inclusion is a top priority at BUDS, please note we expect respectful conduct at all times.

What do I wear and what do I need to bring with me?

  • Come dressed for exercise.
  • Ideally wear cleats/football boots, but you can wear runners if that is all you have.
  • A light and dark top – preferably white and black – so we can balance numbers when we divide into teams.
  • A water bottle.

We provide all other needed gear.

League Format

BUDS run a social sport league where individuals of any skill level can sign up and are drafted onto a team. The next league will start August 30th, and the sign up for this league will open at 8pm on August 9th. The league runs for about 10 weeks.

In between league seasons we run a ‘pick up’ game meaning that anyone can turn up and play, however please register with AFDA first for insurance purposes.

We enjoy playing mixed team sports and would love more women-matching players to join our community! For this reason we welcome women-matching player sign ups at any time throughout the season, just register with Australian Flying Disc Association (free) to cover your insurance and then turn up and play. Men-matching players will need to sign up during the sign up period as these spots fill up fast.

BUDS runs coaching sessions around the games on a Wednesday and all teams have some experienced players who can help to teach beginners as you go. We value inclusion and prioritise the participation of beginner players.

Please refer to our event page and Facebook page for updated information on game start times etc.

How much does it cost?

Full season registration costs $70. There is no additional per-week fee.

New gender diverse and female identifying players use discount code DIVERSE on the rego page for a $20 discount.

First time woman-matching player registrations come with a free disc!

Do I need to register?

First you will need to create an Australian Flying Disc Association (AFDA) account. This is free.

Next you will need to register for the league via the UV Event Registration Portal

Anything else I need to know?

Wet weather policy – games may be cancelled based on field conditions on day of match. If games are cancelled a single make up game will be added to the end of the round robin with finals moving back one week.
