What is Ultimate Frisbee?
Ultimate Frisbee is a team sport that is like a cross between netball and American football, played with a flying disc. Teams work together to pass the disc around and try and take a catch in the endzone to score a goal. The sport is non-contact and self referred, so players take responsibility for the safety of themselves, their teammates and their opponents.

Sounds interesting, but I have never played before?
If you’re brand new to ultimate, Saturday Ultimate is the place for you!
Coaching is available every week. Curious as to how a forehand works? Or tricks to throw around people? Our accredited coaches will help you from 10:15-10:45am.
We play with “Saturday Rules” – if you make a mistake as a beginner, we let you try again. Drop an easy pass? Land slightly out-of-bounds? Find your forehand throw goes awry? A call of “Saturday” means you get an extra go.
We assign teams for three games so you have a chanceto play with more people.
When/where do you play?
We play on the north side of the Ikon Park stadium in Princes Park, Carlton.
The closest tram stop is Route 19, Stop 17 (Ievers St). Alternatively, the 1 or 6 tram lines, Stop 118 (Pigdon St) or the Royal Park train station (Upfield line) are about a 10-15 minute walk away.
Street parking is available on Royal Parade, with no meter fees on Saturdays.
The schedule is:
- 10:00am: People gather and warm-up.
- 10:15am – 10:45am: Coaching
- 10:45am onwards: Games of ultimate! We divide into light/dark and number off into teams. We assign teams so that everyone gets to play, rather than strictly sticking to 7-on-7 on the field.
The ending time depends on the people and the weather. Normally, we play 3 games, ending around 12:30pm. If people are keen and the weather’s nice, there’s often a fourth game. If it’s hot, we might stop early.
After the games, there’s often a trip to the pub for lunch and a cold drink!
What do I wear and what do I need to bring with me?
- Come dressed for exercise. Note you should wear flat shoes or be barefoot only – no cleats/football boots.
- A light and dark top – preferably white and black – so we can balance numbers when we divide into teams.
- A water bottle.
We provide discs, cones, and sun cream.
How much does it cost?
It’s free!
We appreciate, but do not expect, gold coin donations to replenish discs, cones, and sun cream.
Do I need to register?
You don’t need to register in advance – just show up! If you’ve never played ultimate before, we can help you through the registration process on the day.
Anything else I need to know?
We’re a primarily social group aimed at welcoming new people to the sport. If you’re experienced, note that we don’t play with stacks, forces, hard cuts, or zone defense.
Saturday Ultimate is committed to a safe, inclusive environment and follows the National Integrity Framework (NIF), the standards set by Ultimate Victoria (UV) and the Australian Flying Disc Association (AFDA). Read more about the NIF and standards here.
