2025 Victorian Ultimate League
Ultimate Victoria’s competition for athletes 23 years old and younger is back for 2025!
VUL is a combination of high-end skills coaching and competitive gameplay to prepare young players for senior club level competition, national Under 20 / Under 24 team representation, or whatever other ambitions they have. The competition will feature four teams in both open and women’s divisions.

Competition Format
All players who sign up are welcome to attend the Open Day to meet the coaches, experience some high-end skills coaching, and play games against their peers.
After the Open Day, players will be placed into one of four teams in each division for the competition. Each Gameday will consist of skills-based training session with team coaches in the morning, followed by a game against another team in the afternoon. The league will be a round robin across three Gamedays, with a Finals Gameday to crown the VUL champions in each division.
Gamedays are happening across two weekends to make it easier for regional athletes to take part. UV strongly encourages regional athletes of all experience levels to fill out the expression of interest form so we can work with you to get the most out of this league.
The Teams
Bunyips are an indigenous legend from (among other areas) northern Victoria and around the Murray river. Royal Blue represents the rivers of the Murray basin.
Lowland Copperheads are native to the Dandenong ranges. Emerald green represents the eastern Victorian High Country landscape.
Kelpies were originally bred in western Victoria (Casterton). Red Ochre represents the Mallee landscape of the north-west of the state.
Tiger Moths references both planes popular at Moorabbin Airport post-WWII, plus an insect species native to southern coastlines. Pink represents the state’s floral emblem (common pink heath).
Coaches
UV is currently accepting EOIs for community members interested in being a coach for VUL. With experienced coaches already committed, this is a great opportunity to get your start in coaching, or to build on your existing experience.
Coaches will have the opportunity for their involvement in VUL to count towards requirements for earning AFDA Development (Level 2) Coach accreditation.

Game Officials
UV is working with AFDA and WFDF to develop a simplified form of the Game Advisor role that can be taught and practised below national championship level.
Being a VUL Game Official helps to improve the quality of gameplay and enhance athlete’s understanding of the Spirit Of The Game. Involvement will also open up opportunities to be appointed for national championship events and even international events.
UV is looking for community members interested in learning how to be a Game Official. You do not need to have played a competitive level of Ultimate before – just someone who is keen to share a love for the game!

Player Eligibility
To be automatically eligible for VUL, athletes must…
a) have resided in Victoria or Tasmania for at least the last three months, or be a member of a club affiliated with UV
b) be in good financial standing with UV and its affiliated clubs
c) must have been born between January 1, 2002 and July 1, 2011
Women’s division out-of-age eligibility: if you were born before January 1, 2002, but have never played a senior age women’s division tournament before, you can claim out-of-age eligibility for this program.
Interstate eligibility: EOIs are welcome from athletes from other states, but priority for team placement will be given to Victorian and Tasmanian athletes

Expressions of Interest
Ultimate Victoria is welcoming expressions of interest from the community to be a part of VUL as an athlete, coach or official. Expressing interest is not a commitment to attend, it just means we can contact you directly with more information. You can make a decision on your commitment later.
There will be registration fees for athletes participating in the Open Day and the league. UV is balancing the need to keep costs low for this league to be accessible against having the resources to provide a high quality development opportunity and playing experience.
Frequently Asked Questions
I only started playing ultimate this year. Is this suitable for me?
Yes! UV highly encourages all age-eligible athletes to put their name down and attend the Open Day. You never know what the coaches might see in you.
I’m not going to try out for a national team or senior club team. Should I bother with this?
Yes. While the main purpose will be to prepare athletes for higher levels of play, UV also wants players who just play for the love of the game to be involved.
Do I have to play in this to try out for a national U20 or U24 team?
Gamedays 1 and 2 have been designated by AFDA as selection events for the 2026 Australian U20 national squad. To be eligible, you need to have been born on or after January 1, 2007. As well as signing up for VUL, athletes will also need to register for the selection process with AFDA – click for more information via the AFDA website.
All athletes who register with AFDA for national U20 selection will automatically be selected to a VUL team.
VUL is not part of the selection process for future national U24 teams, however it is designed to give athletes an advantage over those who don’t take part.
Can I be a part of a team if I can’t make all of the dates?
Yes. Registration options for single gamedays and weekends will be available.
When are tryouts?
There is no selection process for teams. League coaches and UV will determine team composition to ensure a competitive league and to maximise potential development benefits. While efforts will be made to ensure as many interested athletes are able to take part, there will be a limit in the number of places on each team on each Gameday. Options such as training-only places will be considered.
Do I have to be from Victoria?
As well as all age-eligible players who reside in Victorian being eligible, players who are members of clubs affiliated with Ultimate Victoria are eligible to take part.
Places in the league for Tasmanian athletes are available under UV’s representative teams agreement with Tasmanian Ultimate Association. A discounted single-weekend registration will be available for them.
Other interstate athletes are welcome to express interest in involvement but will not receive the same priority for places on teams as local athletes.
I played VUL last year. Will I be on the same team that I played for last year?
Yes.
Can I sign up to only play for a particular team or with a particular coach?
The league coaches and UV will determine team composition to ensure a competitive league and to maximise potential development benefits.
The league coaches will be working together to deliver the same skill-based curriculum relevant to national and international competition during the training component of each Gameday. The experience gained by all players taking part in the league will be universal.
Do I have to be over 18?
No. Youth players that are eligible for senior competition in Victoria (age 14+) are welcome to attend the Open Day and express interest in competing in the league.
Will games be livestreamed?
No. The objective of VUL is providing the highest quality coaching and in-game experience possible at an affordable price for young athletes. Livestreaming doesn’t contribute to that objective. That said, we will have a VUL media team collecting photos and video highlights at Gamedays to be shared across UV social media between the Gameday weekends.
