2024 State Representative Teams – campaign staff applications open

Ultimate Victoria is calling for applications for coaching roles with Under 18 teams, and player leadership roles with the Masters teams for 2024. The teams will be preparing to compete at the Australian Youth Ultimate Championships and Australian Masters Ultimate Championships later this year.

UV is also providing an update on our Under 22 program for 2024.

Official dates and locations for both events are yet to be announced, however it is expected that they will both be held during the June/July school holiday break.

Please consider this time period and likelihood of travel within Australia if you are interested in applying for a role. Travel and accommodation costs are covered by the campaign.

Appointed coaches for the Under 18 campaign will work under a Program Head Coach in a structure to be determined by the UV State Representative Teams committee. Coaches may be appointed to specific teams, to specific skill or strategic areas (eg: defence coach), or to training-only roles.

The expected time commitment for Under 18 Coaches are weekend training camps between April and June, plus attendance at the Australian Youth Ultimate Championships.

Player leadership for the Masters campaign will work with UV staff on determining team objectives, conducting a selection process, and coordinating team logistics (eg: travel and accommodation). It is anticipated that multiple leaders are appointed to work as a collective. Leaders can be playing or non-playing.

The expected time commitment for Masters team leadership are 2 or 3 weekend-long selection/training camps held in Melbourne between April and June, plus attendance at the Australian Masters Ultimate Championships.

Apply for a role

The application form can be considered an expression of interest, and only asks applicants to respond to essential selection criteria.

Initial applications will be presented to the UV State Representative Teams Subcommittee. Applicants may then be asked to present further information for consideration. The final stage of the process will be an interview with UV staff.

If you wish to discuss your application prior to submitting, please contact UV General Manager Simon Talbot – simon [at] ultimatevictoria.com.au

Applications are due by 11.59pm on Thursday 29th February, 2024.

Appointments will be finalised in early March. UV may move forward with the application process for candidates prior to the application closure date.

Update on UV Under 22 Program

Dear UV members,

Following a comprehensive review of its State Representative Teams program, Ultimate Victoria has made the decision to not form representative teams for the Under 22 age category in 2024. Instead, UV will be conducting an intra-state high-level competition for eligible athletes to prepare them for national Under 24 team representation in 2025.

The decision was a difficult one to make given the emotional connection many athletes and coaches, including myself, have to the Leadbeater’s Possums, Weedy Seadragons, Blue Devils and Greater Bilbies names. However following feedback from athletes involved in the 2023 program, consultation with former program coaches, consultation with elite level coaches based in Victoria, and debate within the State Representative Teams subcommittee, it was determined that the program was no longer meeting the needs it was established to service in 2016.

With several opportunities already available to athletes under the age of 22 to compete in mixed gender ultimate in Victoria, the Under 22 program struggled to maintain prestige in a crowded calendar for potential athletes. Without an open or women’s division likely to be viable at the Australian Under 22 Ultimate Championships in the near future, UV would prefer to encourage involvement in mixed division ultimate at the University Mixed Ultimate Championships in July and the Victorian Mixed Ultimate Championships in September.

The increasing cost of interstate travel also presented a significant barrier to participation for many eligible athletes, with expressions of interest in the 2023 program substantially reduced from previous years. UV’s commitment to inclusion in all opportunities means removing or reducing financial barriers wherever possible. This has led to the conception of a Victorian-based elite pathway competition to replace the Under 22 representative team program.

The new competition will see geographically-based open and women’s squads being created that will prepare athletes for the selection process for the Goannas and Stingrays (national Under 24 teams) programs in 2025. There will be a mix of high-end skill development training, plus competition between squads, over five days split across multiple weekends between July and October.

We have already engaged a number of coaches with state and national team experience to guide the competition’s establishment, and we are working on methods of keeping the cost of involvement as affordable as possible.

Details of this competition will be shared during February, with signups opening in April 2024.

Regards,
Simon Talbot
