What is Ultimate Frisbee?

Ultimate Frisbee is a team sport that is like a cross between netball and American football, played with a flying disc. Teams work together to pass the disc around and try and take a catch in the endzone to score a goal. The sport is non-contact and self referred, so players take responsibility for the safety of themselves, their teammates and their opponents.

See our What Is Ultimate page for more.

How do you play indoors?

Typically Ultimate Frisbee is played on a large grass pitch with seven players per team. However some changes are made to play indoors. The pitch is smaller (same size as a netball or basketball court) and the teams are smaller too – 4 or 5 per team. This means that everyone is always involved! Being inside also means there’s no wind and rain affecting the game.

How does the league work?

Dandenong Ultimate League works very differently from other sports leagues you may have played before. There are no set teams – new teams are drawn at random every week – and every individual has their wins and losses counted so that new champions are crowned every month!

We play like this for a few reasons. Firstly, it’s cheap! You don’t have to pay a membership or registration fee up front, you just pay for the weeks you turn up. You don’t need to find a team or gather up a group to play, you can arrive on the night and be placed into a team. It also requires less commitment – for example if you can only play every second week, or you join the league late, you can still take part.

I’ve never played before!

That’s ok! From 7pm each week we run learn to play sessions where coaches teach you the basic skills and play some mini games with other new players. And the best part is that it’s free!

If you’re brand new to ultimate, or have not played any sport lately, we suggest coming to 2 or 3 learn to play sessions before joining in the league. But if you’re super keen to give it a go on your first week we’re not going to say no!

What do I wear and what do I need to bring with me?

You will need to wear runners or other flat-soled shoes, but otherwise whatever you are comfortable running around in. Please bring a white shirt and a dark shirt with you as these help us designate the teams. There are change rooms at the venue, but most players just put their white/dark on over the top of whatever else they have on.

Bring a water bottle as you will get thirsty playing! Otherwise we have all the equipment you need to play ready to go.

How much does it cost?

Learn to play sessions are free. League sessions are $5 per week. There is no membership or registration fee, you just pay each week you can be there! EFTPOS payment is available at the venue.

Do I need to register?

No need to pre-register anywhere, just turn up! If you are new to Dandenong Ultimate League, we will ask you to fill out a short form on your first week so we have your contact details.
